Self-supporting warehouse for Sitab: Vertical storage solution to address space constraints
Client
Sitab is a company dedicated to the design and manufacture of interior space divisions for offices, hospitals, or laboratories. It is a leader in Spain and operates on three continents: Europe, America, and Africa, exporting over 40% of its production.
Need
The company’s growth plan created the need to build new warehouses, but Sitab’s location did not allow for expansion. After evaluating the costs associated with a potential relocation, due to the scarcity and high prices of industrial land, the company opted to build a high-rise warehouse for finished product storage.
Solution
POLYPAL designed and built this 24-meter high self-supporting warehouse operated by a stacker crane, with a capacity for 400 pallets. This warehouse, with a narrow and slender design, occupies an area of 320 m2, with a length of 44 meters and a single ground support of 7.5 meters.
The main complexity of the project lay in the location, as Sitab is situated in Itziar (Gipuzkoa), in an area that can experience winds exceeding 100 km/h. Given the narrowness and height of the warehouse, a thorough study was necessary to evaluate wind loads and structural resistances, ensuring the safety of the installation in this high-exposure area to intense winds.
Self-supporting warehouses are major engineering projects that require precise design, as in addition to the weight of the load units and the forces generated by automated handling equipment, external elements affecting the warehouse must also be considered, such as wind force, overloads from snow and rain, or seismic loads.
"The reason for choosing POLYPAL for the warehouse's metal structure was because, for such a narrow and slender construction at those heights, it was the most competitive solution and gave us the guarantee of meeting our needs."
Xabier Agirre, CEO of Sitab
Technical Specifications
- Self-supporting warehouse operated by stacker crane
- Total height: 24 meters
- Storage area: 320 m2
- Load capacity: 400 pallets
- Designed to withstand strong wind loads exceeding 100 km/h
The main challenge of the project was guaranteeing the stability and safety of the warehouse, given its narrow structure and height in an area exposed to winds exceeding 100 km/h
