Client

ElPozo Alimentación is a Spanish company, a leader in the food sector with a presence in more than 80 countries. It specializes in the production of meat and processed products, such as sausages, hams, fresh meats, and prepared meals.

Need

This new project arose from the company’s need to increase storage capacity, automate storage operations, guarantee complete traceability of stored materials, and optimize response times in customer service.

Solution

In less than 8 months, the POLYPAL team has built this 33 m high warehouse with an area of 3,000 m². It has a capacity for 14,320 pallets and is intended for the storage of frozen food products at -20ºC. This self-supporting warehouse is fully automated, operated by stacker cranes with shuttles, to optimize space and provide an efficient solution for managing frozen products.

How does a self-supporting warehouse operated by stacker cranes with shuttles work?

In this type of warehouse, shuttles and stacker cranes are responsible for handling the load automatically. Pallets arrive at the warehouse via a conveyor belt or an automated entry system.

Once the pallet is detected and the system determines its location within the warehouse, the stacker crane picks up the pallet and moves to the corresponding level where that pallet should be placed.

Next, the shuttle, which is stationed on that level, positions itself near the stacker crane to receive the pallet. The shuttle picks up the pallet and transports it horizontally along the rack until it deposits it in the designated location.

Key Project Data

Galvanized Shelving for the Food Industry

The warehouse structure consists of galvanized shelving. In warehouses with high sanitary and food safety requirements, the galvanized finish is the appropriate solution to maintain optimal conditions for stored products.

Furthermore, the galvanized finish provides a protective layer that ensures greater durability and reduces installation maintenance.

Warehouse design under the Seismic-Resistant Construction Standard

ElPozo’s self-supporting warehouse is located in Alhama de Murcia. Since this is one of the areas with the highest probability of seismic activity in the country, the warehouse design presented additional challenges, due to the need to guarantee structural stability and safety against earthquakes. The design of a self-supporting warehouse in a seismic zone must consider both the Seismic-Resistant Construction Standard (NCSE-02) and the general structural design regulations with the Technical Building Code (CTE).

In a self-supporting warehouse, the shelving not only supports the weight of the goods and handling equipment, but is also exposed to the effects of snow loads, wind actions, temperature variations, and seismic actions, as is the case in Alhama de Murcia.
