Download Success Stories

Mercadona, the leader in the distribution sector in Spain, has over 1,600 supermarkets in Spain and Portugal. Under an urban proximity commerce model, it offers food, cleaning, and perfumery products.

Need

Mercadona wanted to equip its new 15,000 m2 e-commerce distribution logistics platform. With this new Madrid “hive,” as Mercadona calls its e-commerce model, the company moves order preparation and shipping to these distribution centers, rather than managing them one by one from its stores. This increases productivity, efficiency, and improves service.

Solution

To optimize order preparation and distribution processes for the online channel from the warehouse itself, 4 storage areas adapted to each type of product and need were designed: area for ambient temperature products, refrigerated, frozen, and auxiliary storage area.

WAREHOUSE FOR AMBIENT TEMPERATURE PRODUCTS

This warehouse area is intended for both packaged products that do not require refrigeration and fresh products that are received and prepared on the same day as delivery to the customer to guarantee maximum quality and freshness.

For the storage of these types of products, picking shelving with metal panels was installed. These shelves allow both replenishment and order preparation from any side with total flexibility.

As support for the ambient temperature product warehouse, conventional pallet racking for heavy loads was also installed.

WAREHOUSE FOR REFRIGERATED PRODUCTS WITH CHAMBERS AT 3 AND 12ºC

For the storage of refrigerated products, picking shelving with inclined load levels with metal mesh was installed. In these shelves, replenishment and preparation are done from the front of the plastic boxes. This type of module allows modification of both the input and output direction and its degree of inclination. Likewise, all modules are compatible, so they can be exchanged without problems and allow quick and easy relocation of levels.

As in the ambient temperature product area, modules of picking shelving with metal panels were also installed here, allowing replenishment and order preparation from any side.

WAREHOUSE FOR FROZEN PRODUCTS WITH CHAMBERS AT -30ºC

The warehouse area intended for frozen products was designed to work using the FIFO picking system. For this, gravity dynamic levels were installed in medium-duty shelving. These picking shelves are adapted for replenishment and order preparation from any side. They allow modification of both the input and output direction and the degree of inclination of the shelf. All modules are compatible with each other, which facilitates the movement of levels if necessary.

This shelving design allows working at -30ºC with total fluidity with any type of container and product size. Gravity dynamic shelving is characterized by its high storage density, utilizing up to 90% of the available space.

AUXILIARY WAREHOUSE AREA

The fourth area of the warehouse was set up for maintenance and filing work. Systems of medium-duty shelving with metal panels were installed for the area dedicated to warehouse maintenance management, and systems of tray shelving for light loads for the filing area.
